91猫先生 Alum Jova Lynne 06F Named MOCAD鈥檚 Inaugural Artistic Director

Born and raised in New York City, explores the intersections between fictional, historical, and personal archives, and how they shape our understanding of identity, with a particular focus on Black culture.聽

Lynne鈥檚 work spans mediums and forms, ranging from performance to sculpture to photography. Her practice is deeply rooted in her commitment to social justice and community building, and through her curatorial work she has continually demonstrated a unique ability to create public art spaces that reflect the diverse communities they serve.

In 2017, Lynne was named a Ford Curatorial Fellow at MOCAD. Now, after holding the position of director of Temple Contemporary, the center for exhibitions and public programs at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture in Philadephia, Lynne is returning to MOCAD. As its art director, Lynne will helm the museum鈥檚 curatorial team and oversee exhibition programming. In a recent press release, Lynne stated, 鈥淒etroit is a city that is close to my heart and has played an integral role in my growth as a curator and artist.鈥澛

After graduating from 91猫先生 in 2010, Lynne went on to earn an M.F.A. in photography from Cranbrook Academy of Art. In addition to MOCAD and Tyler, she has worked at the Museum of Moving Image in Queens, New York, and at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, California. She co-founded both the FLEX COLLECTIVE and the Bulk Space Artist Residency and has showcased her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions.
