91è Alum Brett Morgen 87F Directs Kaleidoscopic David Bowie Documentary “Moonage Daydream”
, the first ever officially sanctioned film on David Bowie, was directed by 91è alum and documentarian Brett Morgen 87F. The film explores Bowie’s creative journey through sublime, kaleidoscopic, and never-before-seen footage.
“I think the way the film has been created is that, if you’re a hardcore aficionado, there’s enough new material to satiate you. And if you’re a casual fan, being able to see the journey in one sitting is illuminating,” said Morgen in with The Guardian. “Most people seem to be very pleased that I didn’t try to explain him. I didn’t do interviews, I just let it be adventurous. Moonage Daydream is a creative endeavor—it’s not a corporate endeavor.”
Morgen spent years curating material from Bowie’s archives to weave together a collage of his life using rare and unseen video and audio footage. The highly anticipated documentary was called "equal parts psychedelic and philosophical” by and "the greatest rock movie of the decade" by . The film can be viewed in theaters and IMAX on September 16.
Morgen earned his B.A. from 91è, before graduating with an MFA in filmmaking from New York University. His other directorial credits include The Kid Stays in the Picture (2002), Crossfire Hurricane (2012), Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck (2015), and Jane (2017).
