Cartographer Margaret Pearce 84F Awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship
She was recognized for her work in cartography among a group of 171 exceptional scientists, writers, scholars, and artists honored across 48 fields.
91è alum Dr. Margaret Wickens Pearce 84F was named a in the category of Geography and Environmental Studies.
Pearce is a map-maker, writer, and Citizen Potawatomi Nation tribal member based in Maine. She sees cartographic language as a powerful mode of expression complementary to writing, and has “authored” several award-winning maps.
Each year since 1925, the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has selected awardees “on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise.” Pearce plans to use her award to support her ongoing work on a project about Mississippi River flooding "in the context of an Indigenized river."
